Maggie Grace is an American actress who was born Margaret Grace Denig in 1983. Her best-known roles include Shannon Rutherford, a character on ABC's Lost series as well as Kim Mills from the Taken trilogy. Born in Worthington Ohio, she dropped out of high school in order to relocate into Los Angeles with her mother when her parents separated. While struggling financially she landed her first role as Rachel's Room's main character the online video series Rachel's Room in 2001. As a part of the Gyllenhaal Family, she's the younger sister to actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Her first roles were in films starring her father when he was an adolescent. With her brother, she was also on the screen in Donnie Darko (2000). She then appeared on the screen in Adaptation Confessions of a Dangerous Mind as well as Mona Lisa Smile (both 2002). Gyllenhaal was praised by critics for both her performances as the main character in Secretary (2002), which is an erotic romantic drama and Sherrybaby (2006). In 2006, she was also nominated by The Golden Globe Award. Her fame grew for her role as Rachel Dawes, a superhero in The Dark Knight (2008) due to the success of several commercial films she starred in in 2006. The role she played in Crazy Heart as a mother with a single child received her a nomination in the Academy Award Best Supporting Actress. She then was in comedies and dramas such as Nanny McPhee's Big Bang (2010) Hysteria 2011 and Won't Back Down 2012 Her other roles include the role of a Secret Service agent in the action thriller White House Down (2013) as well as a singer in the film Frank (2014) and The title role in the drama The Kindergarten Teacher (2018). Gyllenhaal wrote and directed her first feature film, The Lost Daughter in 2021. The drama about psychological issues won the Best Screenplay Award from the Venice International Film Festival. The Lost Daughter was also nominated for be awarded the Academy Award of Best Adapted Screenplay.
